“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also,” (Matthew 6:21)
Christopher and Hapless had been friends ever since they could remember. Growing up they relied on each other as neither of their families was ever there for them. Hapless was witty, inspirational, and a natural leader. Christopher was close-minded, his world consisting only of doing anything for their benefit. Despite being dragon and human, they were inseparable. As time went on they decided to go out to sea as a treasure-hunting duo. Home was wherever they were, as long as they had each other. Hapless even gifted Christopher his family’s passed-down broken compass, his only items from his past. They traveled the world collecting valuables. Nothing could come between them or separate them from each other. Until the search for The Abundance; the legendary ancient rumor detailing immense wealth, claiming to be the ultimate source of happiness. One day they were tipped off about the location and immediately navigated there. As excitement got the best of Hapless, he ran ahead when they got to shore. Euphoria seemed within reach when they spotted the shining reflection of the riches. It wasn’t until Hapless reached out and touched the treasure that the deception transformed, striking his arm with poisonous fangs. It was too far gone and before he knew it Christopher's world came crashing down as he watched his friend die in front of him. Many years of grieving came with the tragedy. The survivors' guilt humbled Christopher and he ultimately transformed through the trauma he endured. Seeing the bigger picture he decides to devote his life to guarding the spot, warning other pirates, and trying to prevent them from the fate his friend endured years before. Emotionally tethered by fear, he is determined to save everyone as he wished he could have prevented the death of his friend yet many believe he is lying out of greed to keep it all for himself ignoring the handmade shrine to Hapless which lies near the “trap”. Christopher glances at Hapless's shrine , looking at the broken compass, reflecting on the journey rather than the destination.
